Hunker down / seek balanced, slow living adorned with sunlit seaspray

Set into the cliffs overlooking Trevaunance Cove in St Agnes, this charming former coastguard’s lodging was renovated by Watershedd in 2019.

Standing among the wild textures of the North Cornish coastline, the project set out to create a more comfortable, contemporary and practical home, while preserving an aesthetic in keeping with the character of the surrounding landscape. Accordingly, the new extension was clad in Cornish stone, while the worn exterior of the existing building was wrapped in black-coated Larch timber, with a steel terrace reaching out towards the ocean, ready to be weathered by the sea mist.

The renovation set out to maximise exposure to the panoramic coastal views of Cornwall, taking in dramatic crags and crashing waves, adding large windows to each ocean-facing aspect, flooding the space with coastal light.

"Standing among the wild textures of the North Cornish coastline, the project set out to create a more comfortable, contemporary and practical home, while preserving an aesthetic in keeping with the character of the surrounding landscape."

In order to increase the living space to the existing footprint, a new lower ground floor extension was added, featuring a surfboard store and wet room, which sits below the entrance walkway into the original cottage. Internally the rooms and spaces within the cottage were renovated with particular detail in creating an eclectic cosy interior.

Once complete, the property was transformed into a cosy surf retreat; amply designed and situated for a slow-paced getaway focused on time spent with family and the sea.
